  Greco, No Serial number?

  I have a Greco from the 70s (I was told) that does not seem to have a serial number on it, but does have MIJ written on it. I

  Arn't the model # under the neck pick-up on them. Many where made by the Gakki Co. of Japan in the 70's also. Next time you change your strings look under the pup. Have a picture?

  Heres my early 70s Gneco...they changed the logo to Greco sometime around the mid 70s...so as far as I know...this one is very early 70s. My books say p`ps should have Maxon on them, either a sticker or stamped...mine have neither, could be made before the Maxons, or the sticker fell off. I`ve seen pics of guitars that resemble mine but either they have a different bridge or inlays but none that are exactly like mine so I`m not really sure what I have.
  This one has no center piece of wood running the length of the body, it is more of a hollow body that a semi-hollow.

  that may apply to their new stuff but not to their older guitars. I`d like to know where their info comes from...certainly not from the Japan Vintage books I have.

  That's what I thought. Also, if a guitar says it was crafted in Japan I would assume that is where it was made, serial or no serial number.

  It may be a pre 1975 guitar. Ibanez, who like Greco had their guitars made by Fujigen Gakki, didn't start using serial numbers until '75, so presumably Greco guitars were the same.

  could be. The earliest Greco I have with a serial is a strat from the 600 series from 1976 with the number on the neck plate. In my Japan Vintage vol. 2 they have many pics of old Grecos and I can`t see a serial on anything prior to the mid 70s...could be the numbers are stamped on the back of the headstock and harder to see in the photos.
